On lunacy…

It’s been a funny few weeks, recently. The launch of the novel has led to a myriad repercussions which I didn’t fully consider until it was published and promoted. I’m published with Chipmunka, who specialise in releasing texts with a mental health theme. Coming out of the closet as someone with Bipolar is a bit like admitting you wear mismatched underwear.* It’s something you don’t necessarily want the world to know about.

OK, so it finally happened. One of my novels has been accepted for publication.

I’ve been trying to get this to happen for so many years I can’t even remember, sending off thousands of manuscript month after month, and collecting rejection slips and sticking them up in my downstairs bathroom to give me something to read when…

The thing is, I imagined when it happened that the world would stop turning, or my head would explode, or I’d fall down on the floor in a swoon, or something. None of this in fact took place. I don’t even think God appeared from behind some clouds and spoke to me. All that happened was they e-mailed me, accepted the manuscript, and sent me a contract to sign.

And it's all good…

Work was great. I did some filing, cut people off on the switchboard, and made coffee. A full day’s work earned me as much as one hour of copywriting with Stilus. And yet, I liked it.

I got home today to find a letter from an agency to let me know they would like to represent me for my third novel. This after sending out about 20 requests and getting around 11 rejections. I think this is a good rate of response. If I was playing the lottery, I’d like those odds. My first agent was rude enough to drop dead as soon as I was accepted, which I have still not quite forgiven him for. Many people think I was to blame, but all I did was submit a steamy sex scene and write about insanity, which he could have dealt with easily had he not been taciturn and 188 years old. Some people have no staying power.
