On cutting the crap as a small business owner
Posted by: | CommentsSmall business owners are generally harried, fractious and tired. I know this, because as a small business owner, I’m harried, fractious and tired. The problem is, anyone running a business has to focus on three things simultaneously. The past (who have you done work for? Are there invoices outstanding? Have you forgotten anything?) The present (what projects have you got going on? Can you do it all? Have you mailed everyone you meant to get in touch with?) and The Future (how do I develop my business and get further clients? More money? More time? More exposure? A winning lottery ticket and a château in Southern France?
On coping with success

Can you remember when you first set up your blog? Or your business? You started small, and the little steps forward delighted you. The first time you got a comment on your blog and realised it wasn’t spam. The first time a client recommended you to someone else, and you got work from it. These are the lovely baby steps we all take as small business owners.
Did you imagine you’d ever ‘make’ it? That you would come to a point with your business when you could relax in to it? This is a cautionary note for everyone out there who is on the cusp of being successful with their new business.
Great business networking opportunity through York Venues
Posted by: | CommentsYork Venues are hosting a superb event on Thursday July 22nd, at the Hospitium in York Museum Gardens. The event will take place between 2 and 5pm, giving all businesses the opportunity to promote themselves and their services.
The price for joining this event and securing a stand is just £35, and you will get to network with a host of organisations including Nestle – who will be supplying chocolate to help the networking along!
Spaces are limited, so please act now to secure your stand and let people in York and the surrounding area know about you, your brand and your services.
Face to face networking is still the most effective way of getting yourself and your company known, so make the most of this great opportunity, in a lovely venue, by booking your place today. For more information, visit www.yorkvenues.co.uk.

A new book
Today, I savoured the deliciousness of opening a brand new book. I’d finally managed to read the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
(fashionably late, as usual – and much to the disdain of my fellow commuters who not only finished reading the trilogy about three months ago, but are now eagerly awaiting the film release. Bloody show-offs!). Anyway, today was the day for a Brand. New. Book.
On managing your workload…
Posted by: | CommentsYou can have a few relaxing days, and then it all descends upon you at once.
Why does this happen? Do clients of people who run their own business all get together behind our backs, sniggering, and pen in a specific day to make a work request? Is there a customer training course that states ‘if you commission work from a sole trader, make sure your deadline is always yesterday’?
Anagrams – an example of people with too much time on their hands
Posted by: | CommentsNothing shows the English language for the messed up beauty it is than anagrams. Just by popping letters in a different order, we can come up with some superb alternative definitions for words which truly highlight the versatility of the language. Thank you to my lovely mum for sending me these:
- DORMITORY: DIRTY ROOM
- PRESBYTERIAN: BEST IN PRAYER
- ASTRONOMER: MOON STARER
- DESPERATION: A ROPE ENDS IT
- THE EYES: THEY SEE
- GEORGE BUSH: HE BUGS GORE
- THE MORSE CODE: HERE COME DOTS
