Seize the day!

Hello Stilus Blog readers, my name is Andrew Joy, and Jen has very kindly offered me the chance to do some writing with her so you’re reading my first piece on Stilus. Like most regular bloggers I like to write whatever is the forefront of my mind. Whether it is through daily routines, work, fun, hobbies, annoyances, people or generally what’s going on in my world.
For the past few days, what’s been going on in my world has been what to write for this blog. Jen is a very talented writer, this is a great chance for me to learn some new skills and I want to make a good impression.
On taking wise counsel for your business and in life in general
Posted by: | CommentsWho do you turn to, when things get on top of you? In our personal lives, we have a group of friends who we instinctively rely on to keep us together when things get tough. We call them when mishaps happen, and spend time with them because they buoy us up and keep us positive even when things are tough.
Dealing with service theft
Posted by: | CommentsOK, so this is a deviation from my usual blog posts, as I wouldn’t normally bring a subject like unpaid invoices in to Stilus, as it is a happy place usually! But, over the past few months I’ve been stung a couple of times by people requesting my services and then refusing to pay me or even acknowledge me after I’ve done the work.
On weekend writing
Posted by: | CommentsWhen I worked for a corporate company, the weekends were something I looked forward to in the same way as you crave water when you’re thirsty. It was like putting the week on fast forward, thinking ahead until you hit Friday afternoon, and then suddenly everything changes – you’re about to be free! Two whole days of bliss!
Is time managing you, or are you managing your time?
Posted by: | CommentsLet’s face it, time is pretty much the only thing which we can’t buy. Like the best jams, time is only ever home-made. I’ve been struggling for time recently, as work seems to be like buses and it all comes in at once. I find myself running from project to project, wondering how it’s all going to come together.
And yet, it always does. I’ll start out at the beginning of the week wondering how it can be possible that one single person can undertake so much work, and then slowly it seems to get ticked off until the weekend arrives and I can breathe out (a bit).
Not sure how or what to communicate? Try asking!
Posted by: | CommentsThe following advice has been compiled and provided by Andy Bounds, talented Communications Consultant:
How to make your audience happy…ask what they need
“Give me some Rules of Thumb with communication … rules that I can follow. Without thinking.” So said one of my clients recently. I asked what areas he was most interested in.
“Well, when I am making a formal presentation, should I use PowerPoint or not?”
Why ‘job’ is a dirty word
Posted by: | CommentsHave you heard that old expression, ‘never put off until tomorrow, what you can do today’? Smug and annoying as it may be, it is still a wise tenet for modern times. While I would prefer to imagine that the phrase relates to eating chocolate (it could go off if I leave it too long) or seeing friends (nicer than work), I fear it does actually refer to work.
